Finding Ways to Retreat

  1. An act or process of withdrawing especially from what is difficult, dangerous, or disagreeable; the usually forced withdrawal of troops from an enemy or from an advanced position.
  2. A place of privacy or safety.
  3. A period of group withdrawal for prayer, meditation, study.
It was cool and overcast as we headed into July. But now the clouds have gone and the heat is here. In the hot summer heat, my dog Spike finds shelter under the overhangs and tree branches in the yard. I find myself not wanting to run the air conditioning because I’m cheap, so I keep the house locked down and try to not move around too much. But when it gets too much for the family to handle, we turn on the air, and our house is the perfect retreat from the outside heat.

Where do you retreat to when everything gets to be too much? There are times when temptation overcomes us, pressures overwhelm us, and it all comes crashing down. As you feel yourself slipping into a time like this, it can be helpful to retreat. You are not giving up, you are regrouping. Often our chaos in life comes from our being distant from God. Take time to regroup with God, get refocused, and then get back in the game.

Many businesses have regular staff meetings to make sure everyone is going in the same direction. We too need to regularly retreat and meet with our Leader to make sure we are going in the right direction. Businesses do this to keep from getting out of control and overwhelmed. Maybe our spiritual lives can learn a lesson from the business world.

I pray you find ways to retreat and schedule regular meetings with your Maker. Sunday mornings at church is not enough. Put it on your calendar and make it a priority.

Blessings,

Pastor Brad Roth
